Union Congregational Church is involved in many community ministries. The purpose of these ministries is, through action, to demonstrate God’s love for everyone, provide support for both those in our church family and the broader community, and to fulfill Jesus command to love one another. Ministry is about giving of ourselves and our time, talents, and resources to bless and help others.
Bible Study
We provide weekly Bible study which focuses on the scriptures covered in the present message series. Our classes are held September through May on Tuesdays at 10 am in person in the Fellowship Hall and Thursdays at 1 pm online by Zoom. In addition, we encourage daily Bible reading by offering a Bible program that covers the entire Bible in a year.
We also have a monthly reading list of Bible passages.
Music Ministry
The Union Congregational Church choir has a varying number of members depending on the time of the year. For a small choir, they are quite talented. We are always looking for more people who like to sing.
The choir rehearses on Wednesdays at 11:00 in the choir room located in the Fellowship Hall. Music is selected by our choir director to coincide with Sunday scriptures, themes and Christian holidays. Our mission is to share the love of Jesus.
We have a beautiful grand piano and wonderful organ that accompany the choir.
Andrews Basket
Andrews basket food pantry is open the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month from 9:00 to Noon. It is located in the fellowship building near the north entrance. We supply canned and packaged foods for several meals to anyone who asks.
Donations of unexpired food products are collected in the narthex on the 1st Sunday of the month prior to the 10:00 service. Donations can also be brought to the north entrance of the fellowship hall Tuesdays through Fridays.
Thrift Store
The thrift store provides an opportunity to purchase used, clean clothing and household goods at substantial savings. It is run entirely by volunteers.
Hours are 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM Thursday through Saturday. When the weather permits, yard sales are held on Saturdays.
Frequently there are special sales depending on inventory. The thrift store is located in a separate building near the church. Please come in and browse.
Spaghetti Supper
Our locally famous spaghetti suppers are cooked and served by our volunteers September through May. Suppers are served on the 3rd Friday of the month from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. They provide both our members and the community at large a low cost opportunity for food, conversation, and fellowship.
For only $9.00 we serve spaghetti with meat sauce or marinara, a full salad bar, condiments, homemade desserts, and a selection of beverages.
Please join us for the best spaghetti supper in town. You’ll be back.
Senior Meals
Our church has partnered with You Thrive Florida , a social agency serving Lake, Sumter, and Hernando counties under the Elder Affairs Division of the State of Florida to provide a take home breakfast and a sit down lunch for seniors 60 and over.
We provide the space and volunteers along with fun activities. Meals are served every Monday and Wednesday between 9:30 AM and Noon in the fellowship hall.
For information on how to register or volunteer please contact Kate Howe, Coordinator:

Scouting
Union Congregational Church sponsors scouting troops in the fellowship hall on Sunday. Cubs meet at 5:30 PM, Scouts meet at 6:30 PM.
Our troop was the first troop organized in Florida and the first to be church sponsored
Under their leaders, Scouts learn what it is to be a Scout: the purpose, the mission, and how to be of service to each other and the community. Boys and girls aged 7 and up have a place to meet, earn merit badges, make friends in small groups, and learn life and safety skills.
Quilting
The quilting group has existed for over 20 years. There are currently 8-10 men and women participating. Some are just beginning to learn and others are very experienced. Our experienced quilters are happy to help beginners. Everyone works on their own projects at their own pace.
Our 40-inch square quilts are donated to the Lake County Guardian ad Litem office and are given to babies and children in foster care. In 2023 over 50 quilts were donated. We will be happy to connect you with an experienced quilter if you wish to join us. Please contact the church office for more information.
